Groups vs. Smart Groups

Submitted Feb 22 by Michael Biolsi

Stafftool has two different ways of "pooling" people: Groups and Smart Groups. The following chart shows you some of the differences between the two:

GROUPS

  • you manually add people
  • can be public or private private
  • users & admins can send messages
  • limited per account agreement
  • can have "child" groups
  • are visible in a person's profile
  • can have leaders assigned to them
  • can be linked to events
  • allows users to reply to messages (reply to all)

 SMART GROUPS

  • stafftool will dynamically change the number of people based upon tags/filters
  • can only be viewed by stafftool admins
  • only admins can send messages
  • unlimited: make as many as you want
  • cannot have "child" groups
  • do not show up in a profile
  • no designations for leaders
  • cannot be linked to events
  • no option to reply to group messages

Now that you have a basic understanding of the ways that stafftools allows you to "pool" your people together why not dive in and get your organization better organized?

I have updated this TIP to show some more differences now that the program has been developed more.

Will that wiki allow me to upload screen captures? (or link like you do to an outside service? This support site allows YOU to do it, but I cannot.

Yeah, it will, it will be using either textile or markdown. And actually, what I'd recommend it using Skitch which lets you take screen shots and upload them to their service and then grab a snippet of html to embed them. That will work in the wiki, as well as here I believe. Either way, I'd recommend Skitch, it makes sharing screenshots a lot easier. I use it for taking and hosting pretty much all the screenshots here on the support site as well as the blog.
