Addresses with Events

Submitted Feb 07 by Michael Biolsi

Here’s a quickie… a lot of our groups take place at homes of people who are already in our address book, or at the church. Could we have:

1. a church address field in the “account settings” under “edit church”?
2. could we have a button to select an address, or the church address when creating an event? Keep the manual entry fields, but allow us to pick an address that we have already entered.

Yes, this is definitely something I’d like to do. In fact, the back end is already partially set up to support this, I just need to work out the interface for letting people either enter in a new address or access and existing one. Great idea.

Something we have not thought of in this... a church might have multiple addresses (campuses) or they may have multiple buildings on their campus. We do not have this issue (yet) but I can see where some churches may need that control. So maybe in the account settings for the church there is the option to add multiple addresses (like in the people pages)?

What about three radio buttons: o Church Address  o  Family Address  o  Manual Address

  • church address: reveals a drop down of all of the entered church addresses from the "account settings" section
  • family address: provides a drop down of all of the people in stafftool exactly like the list when setting up relationships
  • manual address: shows the entry fields like they are now in case you have an event at a restaurant, park, stadium, etc.

Note: the address "type" for the church addresses would need to be different. Right now it is home, work, other. I am not sure of the drop down would be needed, or the location has a "name/label" option as part of the address so a church could label them in a way that fits their needs: "XYZ Campus, Main Chapel, College Extension, Teen Building, etc...)

Yeah, good point...hmm, perhaps if the address is for a church it just defaults to a text field to put whatever is needed instead of a dropdown...

Michael, I like your idea of multiple church addresses. When we started a church we used an online database which both published our address on a website and included our address in mailings (days of snail mail). It only had one address field. Our church had lease space for an office, but met in multiple locations on the weekend. At the very least, if we are to stay with one address for the church, it would be nice to add the line "meeting at..." with info for worship location. I would prefer multiple addresses. Of course this all depends on how church address information is to be used. Any thought on that, Toby, on the purpose of having church address? Is it a return mailing address or a physical location for worship?

Hey Sam, you can actually add as many addresses, phone numbers, links and email addresses to your church as necessary. If you click the "church settings" link in the upper right corner you'll get this form:

Demo Stafftool
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

And they work exactly like the ones on the people form, so you can add as many as necessary. So like I said, I can pretty easily make it so that if you're adding an address to a church rather than a person I can make it so the name field is a text field that you can fill in with whatever name you need, such as "Teen Building" or "Mailing Address" - that way you can add as many as necessary and they'll all be custom. When I get the "locations" stuff finished up, you'll be able to choose these locations as the address for an event...i could probably make it somewhat like the message "to" drop down, where there are two sections, with the church addresses at top, and the household addresses on the bottom. That way you could easily specify that an event is either at a church location or at someone's home. Of course, there will have to be an option to enter a custom address as well for one-off events that are places like restaurants or movie theaters or whatever. What do you guys think?

thanks, toby. I guess just the labels on the drop down need to be changed. Instead of Work, Home, etc... something like, Office, Mailing, Worship Location, Other.

So I am just about finished with this tweak...the way it is on the latest version I'll be pushing out is that when you add an address to the church, the name field will be a text field, but if you add one to a person it will remain a drop down like it is now. Seems like the labels different churches will need will vary a lot, so it's probably best to make it free form. I'm hoping to push out the latest version tonight or tomorrow.

I agree. The personal records stay for the sake of "simple" and the churches can vary as they will be few, varied and not entered very often. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Hey guys, so I just pushed out a new version that has this update in it. So, if you go the the church settings and add or edit the church's addresses, you'll notice that the name is a text field where you can put whatever you need in there. For people, it's still a drop down. Soon I'll be working on choosing existing addresses for events (which will use the names you set here). I'm thinking like a section for People and a section for Church, where you'll be able to select them by these names...
