Adding tags to groups / Editing tags with groups

As per one of your previous posts, I am adding this as a separate item. It would be very helpful to have a simple way to add tag(s) to a group of people at the same time. Benefits include:

1) less time configuring people records

2) less chance of missing someone because of a typo

Possible concerns: IF you add a tag and want to change it later, it would probably require that you edit all of the individual records. 

I am wondering... if you add this to the filter by tag screen you could then have a "find all records with the tag..." and an option to "delete the tag..." or "change the tag to..."

Yes, I've gotten this request from others as well, and it's on my list of things to do. I'm going to work on implementing tag autocompletion so that you'll see all the other tags you've entered before as you type, so that will hopefully help with keeping them consistent. As for changing existing tags...I think I'm going to have to make an interface to list the tags you've already entered so you can edit them...if you edit a tag in this interface, you won't have to update any individual records, as they all just reference the tags by their id number.

Here is a thought with tags and groups: Each group has the ability to have tags associated with it. What if those tags (the ones entered into the group details) are automatically inherited by everyone in that group? If you move them or add them to a new group they inherit a new set of tags from that group. Thoughts?

Yeah, there's a lot that needs to be explored as far as group inheritance goes. Automatically applying group tags to the people within them is interesting...I'm wondering if it might cause problems somehow, though. Also, since you can now apply smart group rules based on group membership, would automatically applying tags to members be as much benefit since you could just use the membership as criteria for filtering? Do you have any specific use cases where you think this would help you out?

Well, we have talked about having a way to add tags to groups of people. We already have tags for groups, didn't know if it was that simple. Not sure it is the best way, just throwing stuff out there. I am not sure if it would create problems, and wondered if it might add searching (though too much info in the search might render it useless... perhaps the groups function in the smart groups is the best way.

Actually, that new tags interface you have for PEOPLE would be sweet if we could use it after sorting/filtering people. Like a right hand menu with "Add Tag(s) to selected" option and the list of available tags appears to use or type in a new one.

Yeah that's going to be one of the next things...when you select some people in the main listing, there will be a new button along with add to group and delete for tagging. When you click on it it will being up a form to type in tags that will have the same interface to click on the existing tags to add them to the field.
