Getting more from vCard exports

Submitted Apr 08 by Michael Biolsi

I was looking at all of the information in stafftool and all the stuff I keep in Apple address book. I export the vCards from stafftool and import/update them in address book. However, the information I have in stafftool has a LOT more detail - much of which is NOT exported with the vCard. SO... here is an official request for more information to export with vCards:

  1. Pictures, please! [maybe this should be an option you select since it might take a while]
  2. web sites [using the address book URL field]
  3. Relationships? There is a field for "Related Names" and options include: spouse, father, child, etc...)
I think that is all. If anyone has anything else, or can think of why this is a bad option please post!

I would like the tags and groups listed in the Note Section.

Yeah, this relatively recent stuff (like web sites and relationships) was added after the vcard exporting was done, so I could definitely go in there and work on getting it in there...it would definitely be cool.

As for the images, I would love to get that working...I just haven't figured out how yet. The images need to be encoded into text within the vcard files, and since the images are located on Amazon S3 I'm not sure how I'll pull that off...but like I said, it's something I really want and will eventually figure out I'm sure.

Hey guys, great news :) I was able to get all this stuff into the vcard exports, it's now live in the app. To recap, here's the new stuff:

  • Pictures are now in! They import perfectly into Apple's Address Book on all the ones I've tested so far.
  • Urls are now exported.
  • Relationships are exported. I even went as far as setting the specific titles for a relationship, such as wife if the relative has their gender specified as woman, or daughter if the child's gender is specified as female. The cool thing about Apple's Address Book is that you can click on the title and it'll search for that person's name, so it's really easy to look up a relative's info from someone's card.
  • Tags and Groups are now listed in the note section.

As always, be sure to let me know if anything doesn't work out quite right. Enjoy!

WOW! This is amazing! In apple address book the relationships are perfect! I exported 180 records from stafftool, 65% of which had photos. The original photos were uploaded at 2 MB each. Stafftool exported all 180 records, over 100 with pictures, in less than 60 seconds. The file size was about 7.3 MB. It imported perfectly in address book in a matter of seconds. Thanks!

Cool, glad it worked well! I'm thinking I'm going to have to turn some of these large exports into a queued process soon, since 60 seconds on one request isn't very good to have (it can block other people potentially)...so I'm thinking that if an export is made of multiple people (maybe over a certain amount) will queue the job up and then notify the requester when it's finished, similar to importing. I'm wondering if it should be sent along to the requester as an email attachment, or perhaps cached on S3 with an authenticated url that will expire after a few weeks or something like that. Actually, that might be what I try to do...what to you think?
