Group/congregation mapping?

Submitted May 19 by D. Lee Grooms

Working on a project with Microsoft MapPoint to map all of our members and regular attendees. So far, I'm not a huge fan of MapPoint (words like "inelegant" and "kludgy" come to mind). Now that we've loaded that same group into Stafftool, it got me thinking: I wonder if there's a good way to do mapping of groups or the whole dataset in Google Maps (or another online solution)? I don't expect Stafftool to do it for me at this stage of development, but it could be cool. Also thought throwing the idea up here might reveal simpler/more elegant solutions than I can think of on my own first thing Monday morning…

Yes, this is definitely on the roadmap, although I'm not sure when it will be available. We could do some really cool stuff mashing up all the info in your Stafftool database with a Google map though. So basically what you'd be looking for is to be able to view a filtered group of people (or the whole db) and see them all on a map? Is there anything else that would be interesting with this? What are you working on accomplishing in MapPoint right now?

We aren't doing anything too fancy with MapPoint now, in part because I'm still learning it. Since we don't own a building and are also committed to planting other churches, an overall peek at where our people are is helpful to see if we should move, where we have density for new Community Groups/potential church plants, etc. Haven't done much dreaming on what else might be possible—heck, even helping people carpool seems like a good idea these days!

Of course, some geographic data analysis would probably be preferable to our eyeballing the data, but 1) we're still not huge, 2) I don't yet know what I'm doing, and 3) that's a nudge or two past where Stafftool's current focuses seem to be.
